It’s been a challenging 11 days, I have found it hard to make sense of everything. I also limit how much I watch or read about what is happening as it can affect me deeply, I learned that after 9/11.
In fact, I struggled to write this email because I wanted to share about my early menopause days and all of the misinformation I received that left me struggling for years. But that seems irrelevant right now with all the people suffering in the world without access to basic healthcare.
So I had to stop and think, what would I do if I received a call from a woman asking about my services and how I can help her? I would answer all of her questions because they are important and she is looking for help.
Right now it may be hard to think about ourselves and what we need to stay healthy physically and mentally yet it is important. It is not selfish to look after ourselves. That is probably one of the biggest challenges for women, taking time to look after ourselves.
In saying that, I will continue with what I wanted to share about my early menopause journey. In 2010 my GP told me there was nothing I could do, this is what menopause is. A couple of years later when I was seeing an integrative functional medicine doctor, I was sold hard on why I needed to be on bio-identical hormones. I was told I would not be able to think or retain information, this struck a chord because I would be starting nutrition school soon and I needed my brain. I was told I would have no energy, I wouldn’t sleep properly and I would struggle with weight issues. I was also told that bio-identical hormones would help protect my health in the future.
With the hard sell, I agreed to fill the prescription and I stayed on them for a year. During that time, I did not see an improvement in my sleep or my energy and I was struggling with my weight. I was frustrated and the doctor said I needed to give it more time. I decided to stop on my own, I reduced the dose over time and did not return to see that doctor. If you are on hormones, please do not stop on your own accord, I’m purely sharing my story.
I knew my body was struggling and I knew I needed more than hormones to help me get back on track.
In all fairness to allopathic doctors, they have been taught about diseases and the way to treat disease can include medication. In 1966, a book called Feminine Forever written by Dr. Robert A. Wilson, talked about how menopause needed to be treated like a disease. In order for women to maintain their youthfulness and quality of life, he strongly advocated for hormone replacement therapy.
Of course, we know menopause is not a disease, it is a natural transition every woman will go through.
I also know, in most cases, there is much more going on with a woman other than menopause. That was my personal experience and I see the same with my clients. I believe that is the missing piece of whether a woman can enjoy her menopause transition or not.
If you or a woman you know has started or is transitioning through menopause, I would love to have you or them as one of the Founding Members of my Menopause Reset Course.
