As a nutritionist, I’m often asked “how important is it to eat organic?” My answer “it depends!”
There are various reasons I recommend to a client to eat organic, normally it comes down to the health symptoms they are dealing with daily.
If someone is wanting to simply make better choices and their grocery budget is tight, I recommend following the Clean 15 and the Dirty Dozen list.
This list is produced yearly by EWG or Environmental Working Group. They analyze the results of tests done by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The end result is the Clean 15 and the Dirty Dozen.
If you live in an area where the grocery store does not bring in a lot of organics, I encourage you to talk to them about the Dirty Dozen. Ask them if they would be willing to bring those fruits and vegetables in as organic.
Reducing the toxic load our body has to process, especially our liver, can have a lot of positive benefits for our health.
One caveat, on the Clean 15 list, I would recommend choosing organic corn and organic papaya as the conventional version has a much higher chance of being a GMO product.
